Hollywood became synonymous with increased income and long absences fromhome. The manna from Faulkner’s work on screenplays and the movieoptions on his novels was very welcome indeed, but it did not comewithout cost to his marriage. When Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer offered six weeksat $500 a week in May 1932, the couple was significantly overdrawn andwithout credit.
