Mars lander lost upon descent, ESA confirms

A European space probe descending on Mars to look for signs of life has been lost, the European Space Agency confirms. "We are not in a position yet to determine the dynamic condition at which the lander touched the ground", said Andrea Accomazzo, ESA's head of solar and planetary missions. It was not clear whether Schiaparelli, a disc-shaped 577-kg (1,272lb) probe, was still in once piece.
