Julie Comerford has built a career searching for galaxies that contain not one, but two supermassive black holes — light-devouring monsters that have masses millions or billions of times that of the sun. "The mergers of two supermassive black holes is second only to the Big Bang as the most energetic phenomena in the universe," Comerford, an astrophysicist at the University of Colorado, Boulder, told Space.com. Each galaxy has a supermassive black hole at its core.
