Scientists in the UK received €8.8bn (£7.4bn) in research funding from the EU from 2007 to 2013, according to the Royal Society - more than the €5.4bn the government contributed over the same period. Longer term, that €3.4bn gap in scientific funding will have to be met by the UK government to maintain investment in research and development.
