Why IS it so cold in the UK? Northerly flow is bringing cold air from the Arctic

Met Office has confirmed that the dropping of temperatures to -9.8°C last night is the result of ablast of northerly air blown in from the Arctic. This has picked up moisture in its travels over the sea.
