Mars will be closest to Earth for 11 years this month as planets align with the sun 

The opposition of Mars - when the planet aligns with the sun and Earth - occurs on 22 May and will bring the red planet within 47 million miles (75.6 million km) of Earth, said Washington-based Nasa.
