Devastating magnitude 8.2 earthquake that rocked Mexico was so powerful it SPLIT a tectonic plate

An earthquake which killed 370 people in Mexico was so powerful that an entire tectonic plate was split apart. The Cocos plate cracked when it rapidly cooled after diving under the North American plate.
