Howard Hodgkin dies aged 84

The British painter Howard Hodgkin has died at the age of 84. A statement issued by the Tate said that he died peacefully in hospital in London. The Tates director Nicholas Serota, who staged exhibitions of Hodgkins work at all three museums he has directed, Modern Art Oxford (1976), the Whitechapel Gallery (1985) and Tate Britain (2006), says that Hodgkin was one of the great artists and colourists of his generation.
