My mother-in-law, Catherine Fried, who has died aged 78, was an artist, photographer and sculptor who turned to writing , and whose first book was published when she was 72.The title of her memoir of her marriage to the Austrian poet Erich Fried, Über Kurz Oder Lang, means ‘“sooner or later”, and plays on the German words for short and long, referring to the couple’s disparity in height.
