Regulator targeting credit unions only helps banks

The federal Office of the Superintendent of Financial Institutions, the independent agency that regulates Canadian banks and other federal financial institutions, recently decided to prohibit credit unions from using the terms ‘bank’ or ‘banking’ to describe their services. The prohibition was issued by the federal office’s assistant superintendent Carolyn Rogers, who is responsible for regulation, on Friday of the Canada Day long weekend.
