Opinion: Any return of U.S. alcohol to B.C. shelves should include a hefty surtax

U.S. trade representative Jamieson Greer has threatened to impose tariffs by Aug. 19 of 50 per cent on over 500 Canadian items. This was justified by Sec. 338 of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930. Sadly, Greer forgets that President Herbert Hoover signed it despite the objection of 1,000 economists — U.S. exports and imports both fell by two-thirds, which exacerbated the Great Depression.
