Daphne Bramham: Rats! They're decimating the world's seabirds
Nearly half the world’s remaining ancient murrelets nest on the islands of Haida Gwaii and their survival is threatened by rats.
Like all of the 1.5 million seabirds in Haida Gwaii, ancient murrelets spend their lives at sea, coming to land only to mate and have their chicks.
With no endemic predators, the murrelets have uniquely evolved to nest in burrows near the rocky beaches. Then, as soon as the chicks have hatched and night falls, the chicks toddle through the forest and into the sea
