Buyer beware: Duty-free shopping whammy

I don’t usually buy duty-free anything in airports, thinking it’s usually more hassle than it’s worth and the supposed bargains often don’t turn out to be bargains.
So it was a bit of a shock when, after I finally relented and brought some Carlos 1 brandy at one airport duty free shop in Europe, it was soon seized by customs officials at another airport.
