Woodchuck, marmot, ground squirrel — whose shadow can shrink an Alberta winter?

Groundhog Day is supposed to let Canadians know (theoretically) how much longer winter will be, but really, have many Albertans ever even seen a groundhog?
Groundhogs are sparse, if present at all, according to resident rodent experts. But the day, Feb. 2, marked on calendars across the land in honour of the creature and its shadow is as good an excuse as any to learn more about its Alberta brethren — big and small — who often get confused for their spotlight-stealing cousin.
