MacEwan University not the only online scam victim

An estimated $30 million — including $11.8 million from MacEwan University — has been stolen from Canadian entities since the start of this year using an online scam called business email compromise (BEC).
The multimillion-dollar theft from Edmonton’s second largest university last month almost single-handedly equals the total loss of $12.8 million reported by Canadian businesses in all of 2016 by fraudsters.
