Lower costs resulted in higher 2016 net income for Alberta farmers

Cheaper cattle prices in 2016 led to a surprising gain in net income for Alberta farmers as a whole last year. 
The realized net income of Alberta farmers, a key measure of farm financial health, increased by almost 15 per cent, according to Statistics Canada’s 2016 farm income report. The primary reason, said Statistics Canada’s Steve Boyd, is that even though cash receipts declined, there was a larger drop in operating expenses for Alberta farmers.
