Growing Things: Reckoning with fertilizer damage

Q: My husband accidentally spread weed and feed fertilizer on a flowerbed planted with irises.  As expected, neither of the plants recovered nor flowered this summer.  Is it possible these perennials will bloom next year and if not, has this caused enough damage to the soil that it needs to be replaced?  We've also noticed large fungi growing near the bases of our spruce trees.  How do we get rid of them so they do not keep recurring?
