Growing Things: Protect pussy willow tree to ensure winter survival

Q: I was given a miniature pussy willow tree that is now in a very small pot. Given the weather I want to keep it alive through the winter and possibly plant it outside, if it makes it. How should I take care of it, and can the tree be planted outdoors in Edmonton? This gift means a lot to me as it reminds me of my sister, who passed away this summer, and her love of pussy willows.
