Growing Things: Patchy grass from mystery pests

Q: Our lawn is very old and we have been trying to rejuvenate it by aerating, top dressing and overseeding. Last year, with all the rain we had, our lawn was doing well in some places but for the most part had dry, patchy areas. We have had cinch bugs nearly every year and sprayed our lawn once but that did not seem to help. From the attached pictures, are you able to tell whether this was a cinch bug problem that we did not exterminate with just one spraying or whether we have some other pests
