Growing things: More evergreens, more problems

Q: I have some winter damage on two of my evergreens. One is a dwarf Alberta spruce and the other is a cedar. The spruce is on the south side and is planted in a bed right next to the house. It is showing a lot of browning on the side that faces the house. The cedar appears to be turning brown from the inside. What is the cause of both of these problems and what can I do about it?
