Growing Things: Arid beauty found through xeriscaping

Q I'm a relatively new gardener and I have all of my plants in containers because I live in a walk-up condo. My balcony faces southwest so it gets very hot in the summer. Many of my plants suffer in the heat despite being watered twice a day. Are there any tips for growing in such a hot location?
