Edmonton's MacEwan University redefines itself and its neighbourhood

Allan Gilliland just can’t resist.
The renowned composer, who is also the dean of fine arts and communications at MacEwan University, is standing in a room filled with percussion instruments — snare drums, xylophones, timpani, tambourines, tubular bells. A collection of gongs, in different sizes, lines one wall. Grinning, Gilliland goes to the cupboard, takes out a good-sized mallet and hits the largest of the gongs, dead centre.
The deep sound reverberates through the room.
