Edmonton Opera's Hansel & Gretel balances light and dark elements

One-hit wonders are not uncommon in the pop world, but there can be few classical composers whose fame so rests on a single work as the German composer Engelbert Humperdinck.
That one work, though, is of sheer genius. Hansel & Gretel, which Edmonton Opera are giving in English in a new production opening on Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Jubilee Auditorium, is one of the most popular operas ever written.
