Don't be fooled, a longer winter doesn't necessarily mean fewer bugs

Mosquitoes have been just as deterred by the prolonged winter as people have been, but that doesn’t mean they’ll stay away all summer.
The warm weather Edmonton began to see a couple of weeks ago meant a quick melt of snow and thawing of frozen ground, creating the wet conditions mosquito larvae thrive in.
Luckily, those wet conditions dried up quickly, but it was likely enough to kick-start larvae development, said city biological services technician Mike Jenkins.
