Sault firefighters move to 24-hour shifts Tuesday

The Sault Ste. Marie Fire Department is officially starting a new 24-hour work schedule.
The schedule change is a result of arbitrator’s decision during previous collective agreement negotiations. The shift change will occur for a three-year trial period.
Sault Ste. Marie’s fire department is one of the last municipal full-time fire departments to convert to a 24-hour shift model for firefighters, said Chief Peter Johnson.
