'Open Hearth Jack' worked at Algoma Steel: REMEMBER WHEN
John H. McDonald, shown here in 1956, worked at Algoma Steel for 49 years. Born in Ireland in 1895, MacDonald worked with Colville Steelworkers and Lancashire Steel Company before coming to Sault Ste. Marie in 1907 and joining Algoma’s workforce. He held various positions, including superintendent of the open hearth department, assistant works manager and consultant. He pioneered many firsts for the steel industry.
