New legislation kicks in for new city council

Sault Ste. Marie’s new city council will be losing a tax break.
Federal legislation that comes into effect in January for elected officials means their previous one-third federal income tax exemption will be eliminated.
Previously, elected officials have been able to use the exemption in lieu of claiming expenses related to their duties.
Bill C-44, which officially received Royal Assent in June 2017, is expected to put another $30 million in personal income tax revenue in federal governmen
