Elta McLeod was the first woman to be appointed to, and then lead, Sault Ste. Marie Area Planning Board.The native of Sterling, Ont., died a medically assisted death last Sunday. She was 95.McLeod was an English teacher, then librarian, at Sir James Dunn Collegiate and Vocational School from 1964 to 1985.She joined the planning board in 1973, became vice-chair in 1975 and chair in 1976.Mayor Ron Irwin made McLeod’s initial appointment to the board.
