Frauds climbing in city
Climbing fraud rates in Sault Ste. Marie are being fueled by thefts of tap and go credit cards and family members abusing power of attorney provisions to care for elderly relatives.Adding to the problem, says Chief Hugh Stevenson of Sault Ste. Marie Police Service, is perpetrators who steal from vehicles and residences don’t do jail time and end up victimizing others.Reports of fraud ranged from 184 to 266 between 2013 and 2015, climbed to 596 in 2017 and stand at 661 this year as of Sept.
