Letter of the Day: Diefenbaker statue celebrates folklore

When I was seven or eight years old, John Diefenbaker, then the prime minister of Canada, offered to buy me an ice-cream cone at the Central Fruit and Candy Kitchen in downtown Prince Albert.
In 100 or so years, long after the statue has been erected and I have been returned to dust, I’m now wondering if some pompous academic will come along, demand its removal and accuse me of a whopper.
It’s called folklore, and I see nothing wrong with memorializing it.
