Gerry Cheevers doesn’t even try to guess how many stitches he would have incurred had he not worn a goalie mask.
“Without the mask,” Cheevers, now 77, is quick to quip, “I wouldn’t be here right now, you know that.”
While Cheevers no longer has his infamous “stitches” goalie mask — he gave it to his grandson, resisting the chance to personally cash in by selling it — he still tries to leave the audience in stitches on the rubber chicken
