Fire chief recalls rationale behind backyard fires bylaw
Twenty-five years ago, all you needed was a can of beans to protect your right to burn wood in your backyard.
Saskatoon Fire Department Chief Morgan Hackl recalls that prior to the introduction of new rules 24 years ago, firefighters would arrive at a private home to ensure a fire was extinguished.
Open-air fires were only permitted if they were being used to cook food. Otherwise, residents were required to put the fires out, Hackl said in a recent interview.
