Piché and Doyle: There are many alternatives to a bigger jail

A year ago, without consulting the public, the Ontario government announced a new jail will replace the 585-bed Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.
At 725-beds, the new facility will cost $500 million to $1 billion to design, build, finance and maintain. This new jail will be 25 per cent bigger and will also cost approximately $30,000 a day – $11 million a year – more to operate than OCDC.
