Ottawa info sessions to address refugee sponsorship shortage
In September 2015, when the photo of Syrian refugee Alan Kurdi’s lifeless body galvanized the world, Ottawa resettlement agencies were working with 50 groups that had signed up to sponsor a refugee in Canada.
It took 18 months to match all the groups with an eligible refugee. At times, the online process seemed more like trying to snare Taylor Swift concert tickets tickets than a UN humanitarian effort.
