'No ice is safe ice' as firefighters called to help skier

A cross-country skier was lucky to escape unhurt after falling through the ice on the Ottawa River off the city’s rural west end on the weekend, but the fire department is warning people to stay off still unsafe ice and keep kids and pets close.
Firefighters responded to the report of a skier up to his waist in water about 5 metres from the shoreline near Baillie Avenue in Constance Bay at just after 3:30 p.m. Saturday. The 911 caller was trying to throw the skier a rope.
