Mini-thaw prompts temporary closure of full Rideau Canal Skateway

OK, maybe the National Capital Commission jumped the gun a little bit on Dec. 30, when it opened the Rideau Canal Skateway for its 49th season.
One week later, the agency announced it would close the 2.7-kilometre section between Pretoria Bridge (Hawthorne Avenue) and the Bank Street Bridge at 11 p.m. Saturday because of this weekend’s mini-thaw.
The NCC said the mild weather had “eroded the quality of the ice surface and created hazardous conditions for skaters and the public.&
