Jail hotline reports taking 148 calls in its first month of operation

A hotline set up to field complaints and concerns about the troubled Ottawa Carleton Regional Detention Centre has reported receiving 148 calls from prisoners and their families in the past month, far more than organizers expected.Of those calls, 36 were about medical matters, including reports that prisoners had to speak to mental health workers though their doors, sometimes without even opening the slot used to deliver their meals.
