The real rose family is one of the weirdest groups in nature — not a garden of long-stemmed flowers but more than 4,000 species of trees, fruits, thorny shrubs and oddball hybrids that surround us every day.
Some of them don’t even need a partner to reproduce, which should raise some questions about choosing them on Feb. 14.
And most of the big, messy rose family doesn’t even look like our usual vision of a rose. It is far more interesting.
