How Ontario has toughened careless driving penalties

After a history of emotionally-charged cases, there is finally a recognition in Ontario that a fatality caused by inattentive driving should not be treated like a speeding ticket or fender bender at a stop sign.
Last September, the Ministry of Transportation announced the Highway Traffic Act would be amended so the careless driving section takes into account death or bodily harm. The maximum possible fine would jump from $2,000 to $50,000 and potential jail terms would increase from six months t
