By now, the contours, if not the particulars, of a Fred Hersch solo album should come as no surprise.
In that sense, Open Book, released today and by my count is Hersch’s 11th solo outing since 1993, satisfies high expectations that are accustomed to the acclaimed 61-year-old pianist’s deep lyrical seam, warm and well-crafted lushness, and improvisatory zest.
