Editorial: To teach math better, Ontario must train teachers better

There is nothing horribly wrong with the Ontario government’s plan to revise how mathematics is taught; educators and parents have long been alarmed over the shaky fundamental math skills of elementary students. Although public schools have never deviated from their goal of ensuring children learn the basics, the pressure to do better has been strong.
Yet the changes announced Friday miss two deeper problems – one the government can fix over time, and one the rest of us must tackle.
