Counterterrorism fight has cost U.S. $2.8 trillion so far, says new report
The U.S. spent 16 percent of its entire discretionary budget to battle terrorism from 2002 to 2017, according to a new report from the Stimson Center in the U.S.
The study looked at counterterrorism funding, defining the term broadly to government-wide homeland security efforts, the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, and other related international programs. The U.S. spent $2.8 trillion between fiscal year 2002 and 2017, the study noted.
