Mississippi is unfailingly flat. Much of it lies on the Gulf of Mexico. The Mississippi Delta, which extends some 325 kilometres between the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers, is like a vast tabletop. Its dark, loamy soil falls to the horizon; imagine the Prairies with buzzing crop dusters and endless fields of cotton.
