Akwesasne Mohawk council agrees to $45M settlement for seaway flooding

AKWESASNE — Just in time for the 60th anniversary of the flooding of their land to help create the St. Lawrence Seaway, the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne has approved a $45-million settlement offer from the federal government in compensation for the damages caused by the project.
The agreement now goes to a community-wide referendum later this year.
Besides the money, the federal government is also giving back ownership of expropriated lands back to Mohawk Council control. The properties are
