Zone out: TransLink proposes change to distance-based fare system

Translink wants to change the way its riders pay fares.
Since the mid-1980s, the transit authority has used a zone-based system. The more zones you cross, the more you pay.
For some unlucky commuters, even short SkyTrain commutes of just a single stop could trigger a two-zone fare, while others could make lengthy trips and only pay a one-zone fare.
TransLink is proposing distance-based pricing for its trains with a maximum fare similar to the three-zone fare used now.
