The smoke was so thick in one part of Northern B.C. that mid-afternoon was darker than midnight

It was so dark on Hwy. 27, you had to slow down just to be sure you didn’t hit any animal fleeing a wildfire to the west.
Kiff Woolnough was driving home to Vanderhoof from Fort St. James on Tuesday afternoon.
When he left Fort St. James, the skies had actually cleared. After days of smoky haze, the sky was blue.
After finishing up work for the day just before 4 p.m. he was driving south when the skies started to fill again with smoke.
