Remembering Liu Xiaobo

As a noted intellectual leader who refused to leave China after the June 4, 1989 Tiananmen Massacre, Liu Xiaobo had since been imprisoned three times. In late December 2009, he again was sentenced to serve an 11-year prison term. His “crime” was his role as one of the initiators of China’s “Charter 08” inspired by the Czech dissidents’ “Charter 77” and his commitment to pushing for democratic reforms on the basis of China’s own constitution.
