Maritime scenes shine at Heffel auction

E.J. Hughes apparently didn’t have fond memories of his time working on a gillnetter fishboat in Rivers Inlet up the coast. It was cold, it was wet, and he didn’t make a lot of money.
But several years later, he turned the experience into one of his signature paintings, Fishboats, Rivers Inlet.
It depicts a fleet of fishboats being tossed about in dark, turbulent waters, with a classic coastal view of a forest, mountains and cloudy skies in the background. There is so much movement i
