International Women's Day celebrated since 1975

A Women’s Day was first held in 1909 in New York. The following year, the International Socialist Women’s Conference suggested the need for one to be held annually as a way to highlight the issues of women’s rights, particularly the right to vote. On March 8, 1917, Russian female textile workers, in what is now known as St. Petersburg, began a demonstration that helped spark revolution. They were also granted the vote.
