Editorial: Prof pays price for exposing questionable research

The origin of the expression “publish or perish” is uncertain as researchers have claimed first-references to it in journals from 1927, 1938 and 1942. But it was Marshall McLuhan who wrote of it most scathingly in a note to Ezra Pound in 1951 when, using Pound’s descriptor for universities as “beaneries” he remarked: ” ‘Publish or Perish’ is the beanery motto.”
Unfortunately, publish or perish remains the prevailing credo at many universities
